That was one of my Dad’s favorite one-liners.
But it’s a good segue into the fact that the Great Experiment is over. Yes, wolf is heading back to Alaska.
It’s not that I don’t like Portland. Portland is awesome on many levels. It’s got culture, and weirdos, and public transportation, and Universities, and civilization. I can walk four blocks and see more cafes and idiotic bike riders than exist in all of Anchorage - or all of Alaska, for that matter.
But there are two things Portland doesn’t have: the Wife, and the Offspring. And no matter how cool it is, without those two things it’s just kind of… meh. I don’t mind admitting the fact that I miss them both. Terribly.
So I’m heading back home. Studies will continue, just using Alaska’s University System rather than Oregon’s. And while it might mean two years in Fairbanks braving minus 60 degree winters, it might also mean a chance to intern with NASA and work on some rovers.
So, all around, I think it’s a good move.
Care to follow along?

I can see why you’d miss them. NASA, eh? Sounds good. Well, all the best with it, fella.

I stumbled across your post on a website on the question of one space or two after a period. It’s a little geeky for me to contact you, I realize, but I have two things to mention to you. 1) I know an easy way to change 2 spaces to 1 in a large document (at least in MS Word) and 2) I am offering to edit your document for free if you are interested. This isn’t spam. I am trying to get started as an editor and it would be beneficial for me to get some experience under my belt before I can expect to be paid. Please contact me if this offer interests you. There are no strings attached to this offer and I will not keep a copy of your document after I return it to you. Even if you don’t plan on publishing it, I would be happy for the experience. Thanks.

Sorry for the multiple posts. Temporary retardedness.

Personally I think I’d take Fairbanks over a Portland winter too. And for even a chance to work with NASA, I’d RUN all the way!

Funny, I had forgotten that line…it’s so very Donat.
Seriously, I think your odds of success are greatly enhanced if you are happy. And if you end up with additional/better opportunities as well, what are you waiting for?

Oh, I love Alaska. I have friends in Anchorage. They’re constantly sending me pictures like, “Jealous?” Bastards.

If you ever want to intern at Johnson Space Center, let me know and I’ll see what I can do.

Montucky: so sixty below doesn’t faze you, eh? I always thought you were a bit disturbed.

Heidi: that was basically my thought process as well.

rassles: I have literally thousands of Alaska pics. If you ever miss feeling jealous, just let me know. I’ll happily send you some good shots.

Jeff: you have no idea how happy that comment made me. I think it’s a bit early yet, but don’t be surprised to hear from me in a year or two. Thank you very much for the offer!

Sure, you know me, I’ll tag along. In fact, you’ll probably have to give me a couple of bucks to go to the movies, or something, in order to leave you alone.
Best of luck.

I’ve always wanted a robotic dog of my own, do you think NASA has any extras? Anyway, a little Portland is usually enough for anyone.
March 15th, 2009 at 9:05 am
Brent, don’t they shoot robotic things down there in the South?
